How to
Replace the
Glass
Chromatographic Tube
in
Pharmacia / GE / Cytiva
XK 16 and XK 26
Columns
Step 1
To change the XK 16 or XK 26 glass chromatographic
tube please consider soap, gloves and the dismantling tool.
The gloves can protect your hands from broken glass. If the
existing glass chromatographic tube is broken a blotter on
your work surface could help contain small pieces of glass
when you take the column apart.

Step 2
Loosen the black adjusting knob by turning it towards you.
This loosens the gasket that is pressed against the glass
chromatographic tube for a good seal.
Step 3
Remove the bottom piece from the end piece by turning it towards you.
Step 4
The bottom piece removed from the end piece.
Step 5
Using the dismantling tool remove the threaded, circular plastic fitting by turning the tool towards you.
Step 6
When the threaded, circular plastic fitting is removed, the white washer shown in the photo may fall out.
Step 7
Remove the end piece by gently turning the end piece towards you and sliding it off the glass chromatographic tube.
Step 8
The end piece is removed from the thermostatic jacket and the glass chromatographic tube.
Step 9
Please now repeat the process on the other end of the column.
Loosen the black adjusting knob by turning it towards you. This loosens
the gasket that is pressed against the glass chromatographic tube for a

Step 10
Remove the bottom piece from the end piece by turning it towards you.
Step 11
The bottom piece and the plunger removed from the end piece.
Step 12
Using the dismantling tool, remove the threaded, circular plastic fitting by turning the tool towards you.
Step 13
When the threaded, circular plastic fitting is removed, the white washer shown in the photo may fall out.
Step 14
Remove the end piece by gently turning the end piece towards you and sliding it off the glass chromatographic tube.
Step 15
Now you are ready to replace the broken glass tube with the new replacement and reassemble the column.
Please safely discard the broken glass chromatographic tube.
Step 16
Rub a small amount of soap all the way around the outside end of the replacement glass chromatographic tube.
Step 17
Rub a small amount of soap all the way around the inside of the black gasket inside the end piece.
Step 18
Slowly and gently slide the replacement glass chromatographic tube into the end piece and then screw the thermostatic jacket into the end piece.
Step 19
Using the dismantling tool, screw the threaded, circular plastic fitting
into the end piece by turning the tool away from you.
Please be sure the white washer is in place.
Step 20
Shows how the replacement glass chromatographic tube should look when
the circular plastic fitting is tightened.
If the replacement glass chromatographic tube protrudes further from
the circular plastic fitting than shown in the photo the fit may not
be correct on the other end of the column.
Step 21
Now insert the plunger assembly.
Step 22
Screw the bottom piece into the end piece by turning it away from you.
Step 23
Tighten the black adjusting knob by turning it away from you.
Step 24
Slide the thermostatic jacket onto the replacement glass chromatographic tube and screw it into the end piece.
Step 25
Please now repeat the process on the other end of the column.
Rub a small amount of soap all the way around the outside of the replacement glass chromatographic tube.
Rub a small amount of soap all the way around the inside of the black gasket inside the end piece.
Step 26
Slowly and gently slide the replacement glass chromatographic tube into the end piece and then screw the thermostatic jacket into the end piece.
Step 27
Using the dismantling tool, screw the threaded, circular plastic fitting into the end piece by turning the tool away from you.
Please be sure the white washer is in place.
Step 28
Screw the bottom piece into the end piece by turning it away from you.
Then tighten the black adjusting knob by turning it away from you.
Step 29
Congratulations !
You have just completed installing a replacement glass chromatographic
tube in your column.
